Leeum Museum of Art

A Hannam-dong museum run by the Samsung Cultural Foundation. The M1 Korean traditional art permanent exhibition is always free; special exhibitions cost ₩12,000–₩20,000. Why visit

If you can only visit one museum in Seoul, Leeum is a top candidate because both the buildings and the collections are exceptional. The complex consists of three buildings designed by Mario Botta, Jean Nouvel, and Rem Koolhaas, housing works from Goryeo celadon to contemporary art.

For travelers, an even more important fact is that M1 — the Korean traditional art permanent exhibition — is always free. You can see celadon, buncheong, white porcelain, Buddhist art, old paintings, and metalwork without spending money.

Hannam-dong is a quiet neighborhood, making the museum a good mid‑itinerary stop if you need a calm break from Myeongdong or Hongdae.

Closed on Mondays

Closed every Monday, plus January 1, Seollal (Lunar New Year), and Chuseok (Korean Thanksgiving). In 2026, Chuseok falls on September 24–26, so avoid planning a visit then.

A 5‑minute uphill walk

About 400 m (roughly a 5‑minute walk) uphill from Hangangjin Station Exit 1 on Seoul Subway Line 6. Parking is limited; public transport is recommended. Not ideal if you are carrying heavy suitcases.

Photography allowed with restrictions

Photography is allowed in most areas with flash off. Tripods and selfie sticks are not permitted. Follow signage for restricted works.
